Project ‘White Cross’
The Restoration and Preservation of Port Macquarie’s Historic ‘White Cross’ Timber Channel Marker.
History
The ‘Cross’ according to the N.S.W. Heritage Department’s Tim Smith is the only remaining timber marker on the East coast of N.S.W. As early as 1870 the ‘Cross’ appears on navigational charts.
Bruce Jordan, and the late Lorrie Hoare who was the Manager of the Port Macquarie R.S.L. Club, combined their skills to have the area around the ‘Cross’ cleaned of vegetation at the time of the opening of the R.S.L. Club at its present site but during the last decade the area has become overgrown once again.
![]() Bruce Jordan has had a long time interest in the ‘Cross’ and is dedicated to having the project completed. Some cleaning has been done on the site however more is required; Bruce has discussed it with Parks and Gardens Manager Dale Smith, who has indicated support from the Council.
![]() What is visualised is for the area to be cleared and a garden bed designed with the ‘Cross’ as a centerpoint. It would be environmentally wise for the garden to be designed as low maintenance with hardy groundcover.
A garden seat could be placed in an appropriate spot to give the public the opportunity to sit and reflect on the Maritime Past that the ‘Cross’ represents.
Update: The Rotary Club has cleared the site and refurbished the 'Cross' but some idiot has decided to repaint it.
